Every Drop Counts: Janira’s Story

I’m Janira, mom of three beautiful children. I have a 10 year old, 7 year old, and 5 month old. From the moment I first learned I was pregnant I knew I wanted to breastfeed. What I didn’t know was the challenges it came with. Such as: latching, sore nipples, engorgement, and mastitis. With every bump on the road I felt like giving up, but I’m glad I didn’t. Having a support system really helps, I’m really thankful for my husband and the lactation consultants who were able to guide during my hospital stay after birth. I had my third baby five months ago, you would think I would be a pro at breastfeeding but that wasn’t the case. We had latch issues, sore/ bloody nipples, and mastitis. The first month was rough, every time my baby latched I wanted to cry. A few weeks into my breastfeeding journey I started to use a nipple shield and kept applying nipple butter. When she turned a month I stopped using the nipple shield, and started putting her directly on my breast and she latched! It was such a huge relief, I felt accomplished because even though I struggled with all three I managed to pull through. I think it’s very important to note that breastfeeding is not always easy, but being able to work around it is what matters. Every drop counts whether you are a pumping mom, combo feeding, or exclusively breastfeeding. I often had to remind myself that my body was made for this, and even though it’s a sacrifice it’s all worth it.

Keep going,

Janira
