On Tap: Boozy Breastmilk - What You Need to Know About Breastfeeding and Alcohol

Maria MengelComment

When I was a new breastfeeding mother for the first time (nearly 10 years ago!), I distinctly remember wondering when it would be ok to have a glass of wine again. Is it safe? Would I be harming my baby? Am I selfish to want a glass of wine? Would I be judged by the people around me? You know, typical mom guilt that shows up literally the very second you find out you’re pregnant and never ever leaves.

When I spoke with a lactation consultant who told me that if my baby was a bit older (over eight weeks or so), that it was perfectly fine to have a glass of wine (or a beer) without worry of safety for my baby, it was a huge relief! This is literally what she told me, “If you have one glass of wine or a beer, you’d be safe to drive, you’d be safe to care for your baby, and most likely you’d be safe to breastfeed. Just don’t co-sleep with alcohol in your system”. That not only relieved my worry of safety, but also removed my fear of being judged. I mean, if a lactation consultant said it was ok, then it should be ok, right?!

I wanted to share that bit of my story with you. Of course, I’m NOT a lactation consultant, or a medical professional. I’m just a mom and an owner of a jewelry business. So do what works for you!

I asked Alaina, our team member and jewelry studio administrator, to share some safety and research info with you, because she is a Certified Lactation Counselor, and she was happy to help! If you’re in the shoes I was in 10 years ago, I hope that my anecdote and Alaina’s information below will help you make the right decision for you, your baby, and your family. xo, Maria

After nine months refraining from drinking, the decision to have a drink while breastfeeding can be a difficult one. As with all things motherhood, the internet and all our motherhood social media support groups come with varying opinions that can down right make us feel like the crappiest mother in the world. So, here’s the facts with no judgment attached. Here’s what you need to know about alcohol consumption while breastfeeding.

  • Alcohol is NOT a galactagogue, meaning it is not a substance that induces, increases, or maintains milk production. It will not allow milk to flow more freely and will not increase your supply. Alcohol blocks oxytocin and increases prolactin, which in turn affects the milk ejection reflex. Your milk will take longer to flow and your baby’s intake will be reduced.

  • Pumping and dumping will NOT get rid of alcohol in your milk. Alcohol is not “trapped” in your milk. As your blood alcohol level goes up, so do levels of alcohol in your milk. As your body metabolizes alcohol, the blood alcohol levels go down and with it, so does the level of alcohol in your milk. Lactating women may metabolize more quickly. Eating while drinking may help metabolize faster to reduce levels. If you’re planning a night out of fun, you can pump and clearly label this milk until you know your BA levels have lowered. You can label it “boozy milk,” “alcohol milk,” “jungle juice,” “DO NOT DRINK,” or whatever you need to remember this is not for consumption. Rather than dump it, save the milk for baths, topical use, or send it to us to make some beautiful jewelry!!! You can read about lots of other uses for this milk from some of our previous blogs:

  • Any alcohol consumed should be limited to .5g of alcohol per kg body weight. This equates to approximately 8 ounces of wine, 2 beers, or approximately 2 ounces of liquor. Even with this guideline, the effect of alcohol can depend on many factors. It’s important to go by your own cues. If you feel impaired enough that you’re unable to drive or safely care for your baby, then it is likely not safe to breastfeed until your BA levels have come down. To check things more accurately, you can use this calculator:

  • The length of time alcohol remains in your milk depends on how much you have consumed, how quickly it was consumed, body weight, metabolism rate, etc. Generally, alcohol levels in breastmilk are highest approximately 30 minutes to one hour after consumption. The length of time it remains in your milk increases with the number of drinks. Each drink can usually still be detected 2-3 hours later, so if you’ve consumed 3 drinks it will still be there 6-8 hours later. Again, this is only a guideline since there are so many factors contributing to BA levels and how each person metabolizes it.

  • Infants cannot metabolize alcohol like adults. Try to avoid alcohol until baby is at least 8 weeks. The liver of a newborn is immature and will be affected. Infants up to three months metabolize at about half the rate of an adult. Infants older than three months metabolize faster, but not like an adult.

  • Keep in mind that any alcohol consumed may have sedative or stimulant effects on your baby.

    These could include:

    • Short sleep cycles with more frequent waking

    • Less active REM sleep cycles 1-3 hours after alcohol consumption

    • Increased REM sleep 3.5-24 hours after alcohol consumption

    • Increased crying/irritability

    • Increased startling and arousal

  • If you are unable to drive or safely care for your baby, you should ensure there is a sober caretaker and refrain from co-sleeping. Alcohol is a depressant and slows down brain functioning and neural activity. Senses and reflexes are impaired, therefore it is not an ideal safe sleeping environment for the baby.

  • It is important to remember that regular, frequent, and excessive consumption of alcohol and exposure through breastmilk can have serious negative side effects for baby including:

    • Decreased immune function

    • Negatively impacted growth/Failure to thrive

    • Potential motor skill delays

    • Impaired cognitive developmen

The effects of alcohol vary greatly among everyone, and therefore any effect while breastfeeding will vary. What constitutes as “safe” will be different for everyone. A general guideline is that if you feel impaired, the levels of alcohol in your milk may be unsafe. Hopefully some of this information can help you make an informed decision about what you think is best for your baby without the added judgment, opinions, and false information you may find elsewhere. More information can be found at the sources listed below.

If you have concerns about your alcohol consumption, please reach out to your medical provider for assistance.

20 Fun Facts About Milk+Honey

Maria MengelComment

The Milk+Honey team!

Every day of April leading up to our birthday, we have shared a fun fact about Milk + Honey! In case you missed any, we’ve put them all together here in a blog!

  1. Maria and Meghan have a long history of friendship! They met in 2006 in college playing the French horn together and became friends! After college, they moved to the same town, over 300 miles away, to work as elementary school music teachers in the same county. They were in each other's weddings, Maria was at the birth of Meghan's daughter, and their families were all friends. When Milk + Honey was launched, they had already known eachother for 12 years!

  2. Milk + Honey took us over 9 months to get off the ground! We started with no outside funding and a lot of trial and error! Lots of testing breastmilk preservation methods, lots of jewelry designing, lots of mistakes, and lots of learning how to make an e-commerce website! After 9 months of planning and prepping, we finally clicked "publish"!

  3. When we started on April 20, 2018, we had nine pieces in our collection. Only 5 of them remain in our collection today. Our collection today totals 37 pieces of jewelry, and we are always exploring new designs and pieces to add/edit!

  4. We have 8 employees, including Meghan and Maria. Milk + Honey is run completely by women, and we’re proud to be in the top 1% of women-owned businesses in the USA! WOOT!

  5. Our mission is to give you an opportunity to capture your special, sacred, and intimate memories and moments in a beautiful piece of timeless jewelry. We set aside a percentage of every order for our Grieving Mother's Program, where we donate free keepsake jewelry to mothers who have lost a baby or child. (Did you know that you can donate directly to our Grieving Mother’s Program!)

  6. We know that making a decision about your jewelry piece and design can be overwhelming! Everything is custom, so the options are endless. We created and launched a style quiz recently! Take the short quiz and we will help you narrow down the perfect piece and design for your unique style!

  7. We offer 6 different types of metals in our collection! We want to make sure you have options that fit your personal style/preference, and your budget! Which is your go-to?

    • Sterling Silver

    • Yellow Gold Fill

    • Rose Gold Fill

    • 14k Yellow Gold

    • 14k Rose Gold

    • 14k White Gold

  8. Milk + Honey is a very small (one room plus a bathroom!) jewelry studio on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We don't have a storefront! When we started almost 6 years ago, we attended events like MommyCon and baby expos to sell jewelry. But today, we sell 100% of our jewelry online!

  9. Everything we do is handmade, from beginning to end! All of our jewelry is crafted and polished by hand in house or by one of our three jewelry manufacturers. Every single batch of milk is preserved and crushed in a mortar and pestle by hand. Every breastmilk stone is crafted and designed to meet the customer's request by hand in-house!

  10. Our business could not function without the support of other local small family businesses! Some of our jewelry is made by us, completely in-house. Our heirloom collection is cast by a local father-son casting house. It's then hand finished/polished by an amazing jewelry artist! All of our rings are made completely by hand by two awesome women metalsmiths! Everything that milk and honey sells is hand crafted from start to finish, in the USA!

  11. Our DIY kits now are so versatile! They include one of four necklaces (your choice!) but there are enough materials in the kit to craft up to 12 additional pieces of jewelry! Our handbook gives resources for sourcing more jewelry online--rings, necklaces, earrings, etc!

  12. It's true--most of our jewelry is made with breastmilk. BUT! So much of it is made using other sacred keepsakes!

    • Formula

    • Dried Flowers

    • Sand

    • Placenta Powder

    • Umbilical Cord Powder

    • Human Cremation Ashes

    • Animal Cremation Ashes

    • Locks of Hair

  13. Nearly 5 years into business and we've received over 15,000 orders! We have shipped jewelry to 28 countries, and all 50 states in the USA! We had a little "snag" with the country of Poland--see the "Poland" highlight for the full scoop.

  14. We request 15ml of milk or formula, no matter how many pieces of jewelry you order. 15ml is about a tablespoon, or a half ounce. We preserve your breastmilk in-house, by hand, and safely store all leftover preserved milk in our studio! Each batch of 15ml of milk will make up to 12 pieces of jewelry! If you want to add to your collection, you can order again without sending more milk.

  15. We only put our jewelry on sale three times per year! It creates a really fun rollercoaster of excitement and anticipation leading up to a sale. And then we know it’s go time! We’ve got this down to a science—EVERYONE does their part to be sure that incoming orders are processed, all jewelry components are noted and ordered, and all incoming milk is labeled and organized. It’s the opposite of boring.

  16. There is a space on your order form to share your story. Some stories are fun to read, AND SOME are heart wrenching. We feel it’s important for you to have the chance to put your thoughts and experience into words. And, we have the opportunity to honor your story when we’re hand crafting your precious jewelry.

  17. We love your stories so much that we dedicate a whole segment of our blog to you! We feature your breastfeeding stories on our blog for two reasons. 1 - Because sharing your story is important. It is good for us to write and process. 2 - Because it is encouraging to others who may be going through it! You can apply to have your story featured at the link in our profile!

  18. To date, we have hand written 15,493 personalized thank you cards. Every single order gets sent to our customers with a thank you card. When you share your story with us on your order form, we love to send a little note of encouragement/love/appreciation back to you. We say it often, but we are eternally grateful for our customers, who put food on our tables.

  19. Our team is (in order of how long they've been with m+h): Maria and Meghan, Terri, Alaina, Ashley, Stacy, Della, and Suzi. Between the 8 of us, we have 14 kids and 71 pets. Yes, you read that correctly., 71! Can you guess what animal is our most common pet?

  20. Today, April 20, 2024 is Milk + Honey's 6th birthday! Our sale is live for the whole weekend--up to 20% off everything in our collection. No discount code necessary!

Happy Birthday, Milk + Honey!

Maria MengelComment

“Good morning! Want to launch our business today?”

It’s our birthday month! I’ve never been the type to celebrate my own birthday with much fanfare.  But in just a few weeks, on April 20, Milk + Honey will turn FIVE, and that is a big deal.  It’s worth celebrating, so I’m going to take you on a little history of Milk + Honey (and also toot our own horn a little bit).

Six years ago, on April 20, 2018, I texted my friend and business partner, Meghan, and said “Want to launch our business today?”.  It was all very anticlimactic, honestly.  We had been planning and prepping our business launch for about 9 months at that point.  There is A LOT that goes into a new business launch.  A. LOT.  We worked together on a lot of it, but also had to divide many of the responsibilities, according to our own strengths and weaknesses.  We still do this today–hence why I don’t make any jewelry myself… because that would be a weakness of mine LOL.  Most of Meghan’s responsibilities included testing milk preservation methods and designing our initial small collection–so much trial and error!  The few months leading up to our launch consisted mostly of me filing for a business license, designing a logo and finalizing branding, taking photos of our jewelry, and creating and designing an e-commerce website.  I had this long to-do list of everything that needed done before we could launch, and I would tape it to my wall next to my desk.  I would just go through one thing at a time and check them all off as I completed each task.  I actually surprised myself on the morning of April 20, when I checked the last one off! I was so focused on just completing each task that I wasn’t quite aware of how far I’d come.

I checked the last to-do list item off, and even though we hadn’t planned to launch that day, I figured, WHY WAIT IF WE ARE READY?!  So I sent the text, and then officially pushed “public” on our social media pages, shared them all for the first time with the world, and waited.  We didn’t tell ANYONE we were planning to start this business, so it was actually really fun to see everyone’s surprised reactions that we already had a whole business up-and-running.  If you know me, you know I like surprises, and I am also very private.  In my pregnancy 4 years ago, I didn’t tell anyone I was pregnant unless they saw me in person and figured it out.  It was fun to announce her birth to the world, because no one knew she existed until she was in my arms 🙂

Ironically, the same day that Milk + Honey was “born”, I got a call that my doula client was in labor, and rushed off to attend her very quick and beautiful birth! So Milk + Honey shares a birthday with my client’s daughter.  Happy early 5th birthday, Margot!  Want to hear something beautiful? After she had given birth to her daughter like a total bad@$$, little Margot was crying on her chest, so she started spontaneously singing “You are My Sunshine” to settle her. It was beautiful.  To this day, anytime I hear that lullaby, I think of MIlk + Honey’s birthday, and of that sweet moment that I had the honor of witnessing.

Can you believe we actually received an order on DAY ONE that we launched? I was thrilled to see that email come through: “Order Confirmed: Order #00001”.  We didn’t receive another order for 26 days.  And then not again for another 17 days.  And get this: Order #00001 STILL hasn’t sent her milk in so we can make her necklace! HA!  If you’re out there and reading this… we will still make your raindrop necklace if you mail us some milk!

Over the years, there have been SO many ups and downs.  COVID, new babies, new employees, new systems, moving our studio, growing faster than we anticipated, shortages and issues with supply chain, and a billion other things.  I’m so proud of us that we stuck it out and continued to push forward, even when business nearly knocked us down so much that we could barely get back up.

Did you know that 90% of online businesses fail in the first four months?

We started slowwwwwwwly, and we weren’t profitable in the first four months.  But we didn’t give up.  We kept putting ourselves out there.

And get this: 97% of online businesses fail within 5 years. We are in the 3%!!! And we genuinely believe that is something to celebrate!  We’ve had the honor of creating custom keepsake jewelry for over 15,000 people now! WHOA.

If you’re considering purchasing a piece of jewelry or adding to your breastmilk jewelry collection, I hope you’ll sign up for our emails so you won’t miss it!

Xo,
Maria, Meg, Terri, Alaina, Ashley, and Stacy
